Questions We Hear Often
A barrel has far less dead air above your head than a square room of the same seating capacity, so the cabin reaches temperature faster and takes less energy to hold it. The curve also sheds rain and snow without a separate roof pitch, and as the staves take up moisture they expand against the steel bands, which tightens the shell rather than loosening it.
A level, load-bearing base: a compacted gravel pad, concrete pavers, a slab, or a deck rated for the weight. The cradles supplied with the kit spread the load across the staves, but they cannot correct a slope. Check your access route as well — the staves arrive flat-packed, but the door assembly and heater are bulky and heavy.
That depends on heater output relative to cabin volume, the outdoor temperature, and whether the barrel is insulated. As a rough guide, expect 30 to 45 minutes from cold with a correctly sized electric heater. Wood-fired models take longer and vary with how you build the fire.
Thermo-spruce is Norway spruce that has been kiln-heated to roughly 190–212°C in a low-oxygen, steam-shielded chamber. The process breaks down the components that make wood swell with humidity and the sugars that fungi feed on, leaving timber that is more dimensionally stable and more decay-resistant than untreated softwood, and darker all the way through rather than surface-stained. Under EN 350 it reaches durability class 2 — the same class as western red cedar heartwood — typically at a lower price. The trade-off is that thermally modified wood is more brittle than untreated timber, which is why it is used for cladding and staves rather than structurally.
About Our Barrel Saunas
The barrel is the oldest efficient shape in sauna building, and it earns its place on geometry rather than style. Because the ceiling curves down to meet the benches, there is very little wasted air volume to heat, so a barrel comes up to temperature quickly and holds it with a smaller heater than a square cabin of the same capacity would need. The same curve sheds rain and snow without a built-up roof, and the staved construction lets the wood move with the seasons while the steel bands keep the shell under constant tension.
When you are choosing one, work from the outside in. Start with capacity — three, four, or six people — and be honest about how many will realistically use it at once, since every extra person is more volume to heat. Then look at the wood: thermally modified spruce is the standard here for its dimensional stability and decay resistance. Check the heater rating against the cabin volume, decide between electric and wood-fired based on whether you have the power supply or the patience, and confirm you have a level, load-bearing base and a clear delivery route before you order. A barrel sauna is a long-lived piece of outdoor equipment; the decisions that matter are made before it arrives.
